Letters from Newfoundland &c in 1786, 1786-1789.

Manuscript letterbook containing copies of correspondence between Midshipman Joseph Sydney Yorke and his mother in 1786-1789. Subjects include Yorke's descriptions of life at sea and in port while serving on the H.M.S. Salisbury and the H.M.S. Adamant in British Canada and in Portsmouth, England; his friendship with the midshipman Edward Riou; a holiday trip to the Isle of Wight; his impressions of the prison ships bound for Botany Bay; and news of family and friends. Also included are copies of correspondence between Yorke's mother, Lady Agneta Yorke, and various Admiralty officials, including Lord Howe and the Earl of Chatham, concerning her efforts to promote Yorke's naval career.
